KCCT designed Staff Housing, a Marine Security Guard Residence (MSGR), and the Consul General’s Residence (CGR) for the new U.S. Consulate Compound in Karachi, Pakistan. KCCT managed the design and construction administration for site preparation, perimeter security, temporary facilities, and permanent housing on the compound. The design focused on creation of a highly sustainable building with a variety of dwelling units maximizing opportunities for community interaction as well as layers of semi-private and private indoor and outdoor space. The east-west orientation minimizes solar gain. Private outdoor balconies with sunscreens provided for each staff unit create pockets of deep shade that change during the day creating a dynamic façade.  A community outdoor terrace on the Third Floor serves as a center of activity after sunset.

An east-west building orientation, protruding balconies, and strategically designed sunshades positioned based on solar analysis are prominent architectural features of all new buildings and contribute to energy reduction. Engineered wetlands treat waste water for irrigation purposes and roof mounted solar heaters provide hot water to the building. Landscaping is a xeriscape due to regional water shortages and limited irrigation water output from the wetland sewage treatment system.

Phase 3 of the Karachi housing consisting of a four story 6,000 GSM building containing 27 apartment units, expanded dining and recreational facilities, and an expansion of the marine residence is currently in construction.
